Why are people religious?

I think all religions are equally senseless, but I will be discussing christianity since it's the most common religion. How can a person believe in a talking snake, reincarnation, virgin conception, and walking on water. If you say you have faith then you are saying you are an idiot because faith is an irrational belief in something that is intellectually impossible(I am not calling you an idiot, I am saying faith means you lack intellect so by using that word you are insulting yourself). The myths of jesus and god are ridiculous.
