Law on guard dogs in the uk?

In Scotland I am sure that if someone breaks into your home and you are out and they are attacked then there is nothing that can be done. But if you are in your home and someone is attacked I think you could be held liable for not having the dog in control. I am not positive about this tho. Might be worthwhile asking your local police force. Surely they will know.
